Planning

Historical Context

Inaugurated in 2003, the Oceanogràfic was the final and largest component of the ambitious City of Arts and Sciences project. This project transformed a former riverbed into a stunning architectural and cultural hub, becoming a powerful symbol of modern Valencia. The aquarium's design by Félix Candela, with its distinctive water lily-shaped roofs, is an architectural marvel and a tribute to the Spanish-Mexican architect's innovative concrete shell structures.

Photography Tips

  • Use a polarizing filter to reduce glare on the acrylic tunnels and windows for clearer shots of the animals
  • Switch to a high ISO and a wide aperture (low f-number) in the darker exhibits instead of using flash, which is prohibited
  • For the shark tunnel, try a low angle to make the sharks look even more imposing as they swim overhead
  • Capture the stunning architecture outside during the golden hour or blue hour for the most dramatic photos.

Insider Tips

  • Start your visit from the back of the park and work your way forward to avoid the initial crowds that gather at the front
  • The dolphin show has a 'splash zone' in the front rows – sit there for extra fun, or a few rows back if you want to stay dry
  • The underwater restaurant, Submarino, is a unique dining experience, but you must book a table well in advance
  • Check the daily feeding times for animals like penguins and sea lions for extra viewing opportunities.

An Absolute Must-See in Valencia!

We spent nearly six hours here and could have stayed longer. The scale is immense. The shark tunnel is breathtaking, and the dolphin show was world-class, very educational and entertaining. Booking our tickets online beforehand was a lifesaver; we walked right past a huge queue. Highly recommend!

Magnifique! A day of wonder for the family.

My children were mesmerized. The beluga whales were so graceful, and the jellyfish exhibit was like a living piece of art. The park is very well-maintained and the habitats are impressive. It's a lot of walking, but totally worth it. We bought our tickets through a booking platform and it was seamless.

Great Aquarium, Very Busy.

An incredible collection of marine life. The different buildings for each climate zone are a brilliant concept. My only critique is how crowded it got, especially around the dolphin show. My tip: book a skip-the-line ticket online and go on a weekday if you can. The convenience of having the ticket on my phone was fantastic.

Beyond Expectations!

I have been to many aquariums, but the Oceanogràfic is on another level. The architecture alone is worth the visit. Seeing the sharks and rays swim over your head in the tunnel is an unforgettable experience. We spent the whole day here, fuelled by good coffee from one of the cafes. A perfect day in Valencia.

Stunning even in the off-season

Visited in November and it was a great experience. Far fewer crowds meant we could take our time at each exhibit. The belugas and walruses in the Arctic section were a highlight. The facility is massive and well laid out. Getting our tickets online was simple and made entry quick and easy.

A Beautiful and Educational Day

The design of this place is from a sci-fi movie! Very beautiful. The animal habitats are large and seem well-cared for. The dolphin show was very popular and crowded, so go early for a good seat. We appreciated the clear signage in English. A great family attraction.

Highlight of our trip to Spain!

We booked the tickets months in advance for our family vacation and it was so worth it. We skipped a line that must have been an hour long. The kids loved the touch pool and the sea lions. It's huge, so wear comfortable shoes! The variety of animals is just astounding. Don't miss it!

Impressive structure, wonderful animals

The architecture is the first thing that impresses you. Inside, the journey through the oceans is very well done. The Antarctic section with the penguins was my favorite. It was a bit expensive, but for the size and quality, it feels justified. A full day of entertainment.
